Cookies and similar storage
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. Browsers also offer two similar stores, localStorage and sessionStorage, which hold small values for a site without sending them to the server on every request. This site uses all three.
In Ireland the ePrivacy Regulations (S.I. No. 336 of 2011) cover each of these, not cookies alone. The rule is short: a site may store what it needs to provide the service you asked for, and it needs your consent for anything else. Where stored values relate to a person, the GDPR applies as well, and the privacy notice covers that side.
Your choice
When analytics or insight tools are switched on, a banner asks before anything loads. It offers three options of equal weight: accept all, reject all, or choose by group. Until you choose, nothing in the analytics or insights groups loads. Google Consent Mode runs with every signal set to denied, and it stays that way if you reject. The advertising signals stay denied whatever you choose. While no such tool is switched on, there is nothing to ask about, so no banner appears.
We keep your choice for 6 months and then ask again. You can change it at any time with the button below, or with the "Cookie settings" button in the footer of every page.
When you withdraw consent, the site stops that tool and deletes what it can reach: the Google Analytics cookies, _clck and _clsk, your test group and the stored campaign values. Cookies on Microsoft domains are outside its reach. To remove those, clear them in your browser. The steps are further down this page.
What this site stores
The site sorts what it stores into three groups. The names below are the ones your browser will show you.
Necessary
On at all times. The site cannot honour your settings without these two items.
| Name | Type | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
viaclin-theme | localStorage | Your light or dark choice. | Until you clear it |
viaclin-consent | localStorage | Your cookie choice and the date you made it. | 6 months, then we ask again |
Analytics, after you accept
Google Analytics 4 shows us which pages are read and how visitors arrive.
| Name | Type | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
viaclin-utm | sessionStorage | Campaign values for the visit, such as utm_source and the landing page. They travel with a contact form you send. | Ends with the tab |
_ga | Cookie, Google Analytics | Tells one visitor from another. | Up to 2 years |
_ga_<container> | Cookie, Google Analytics | Keeps the state of a session. | Up to 2 years |
Insights, after you accept
Microsoft Clarity heatmaps and session replays, and tests that compare two versions of a page.
| Name | Type | What it does | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
viaclin-ab | localStorage | The test group you were placed in, so that you see the same version of a page on each visit. | 90 days |
_clck | Cookie, Microsoft Clarity | Holds the Clarity visitor ID and preferences for this site. | 1 year |
_clsk | Cookie, Microsoft Clarity | Joins the page views of one visit into a single session recording. | 1 day |
CLID | Cookie, Microsoft domain | Marks the first time Clarity saw this browser on any site that uses Clarity. | Set by Microsoft |
ANONCHK | Cookie, Microsoft domain | Shows whether MUID passes to ANID, an advertising cookie. Clarity does not use ANID, so the value is 0. | Set by Microsoft |
MR | Cookie, Microsoft domain | Shows whether to refresh MUID. | Set by Microsoft |
MUID | Cookie, Microsoft domain | Identifies a browser that visits Microsoft sites. Microsoft uses it for advertising, site analytics and operations. | Set by Microsoft |
SM | Cookie, Microsoft domain | Keeps MUID in step across Microsoft domains. | Set by Microsoft |
Google and Microsoft set their own cookies once you consent. The Google Analytics cookies, _clck and _clsk sit on this site's domain. The rest sit on Microsoft domains, and Microsoft decides how long they last. Both companies publish their own lists: Google Analytics cookie usage and Microsoft Clarity cookies.
How to clear storage in your browser
Every browser lets you see and delete what a site has stored. The menu names differ a little.
- Chrome and Edge: open Settings, go to the privacy section and choose the option to delete browsing data. Tick cookies and other site data.
- Firefox: open Settings, go to the privacy and security section, find cookies and site data, and choose to clear data.
- Safari: open Settings, go to Privacy and choose to manage website data. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, choose Safari, then clear history and website data.
To clear this site alone, open the site information panel beside the address bar and choose the cookies or site data option.
Clearing storage also removes your cookie choice and your theme. When analytics or insight tools are switched on, the banner asks again on your next visit. If you block all site data, the site still works. It cannot remember your theme or your cookie choice, so analytics and insights stay off.
Changes and contact
We update this page when the site starts or stops using a cookie or a storage item. The date at the top shows when the text last changed.
